Should I panic about bathroom mold making my kids cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing a lot lately and I've just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner of our master bathroom shower. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and with the humidity lately, it's gotten worse. Is this the kind of mold I should be panicking about and calling a professional for, or can I handle it myself with something from the supermarket?

It's unlikely you need to panic, but the mold should be addressed promptly. The combination of your kids' coughing and visible growth means it's affecting your indoor air quality. The black patch is likely triggering their respiratory irritation, which is a common response.

In a Dubai villa, bathroom mold is frequently caused by high humidity and inadequate ventilation. Running the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower is critical. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can often handle it yourself. Use a diluted vinegar solution or a dedicated bathroom mold remover from the supermarket. Scrub it away, ensuring you wear a mask and gloves to avoid inhaling spores.

However, if the mold returns quickly after a thorough cleaning, if the area is larger than a square foot, or if it's growing on porous materials like drywall or the ceiling, a professional assessment is wise. They can identify the moisture source (like a hidden leak) and the mold species, which determines the necessary remediation steps. Persistent coughs in children, coupled with recurring mold, are a clear sign the DIY approach isn't solving the underlying problem.
