Black mold from AC: DIY fix or call building management?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a weird, damp smell and I just found a bunch of black spots along the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's been so humid lately in Dubai and that area never gets any air circulation. What's the best way to handle this myself, or do I need to call my building management first?

That damp smell and black spots behind the wardrobe are classic signs of a mold issue, and it's very common here due to the high humidity and constant AC use. The wall behind the wardrobe is a cold spot with no air movement, which causes condensation and creates the perfect environment for mold growth, likely fueled by moisture from your AC system.

For a confirmed fix, you need to address both the visible growth and the moisture source. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aggravate spores and doesn't address the root cause. Your first call should be to building management. Under Dubai regulations, the responsibility for fixing the underlying issue—such as a leaking AC drain line, poor insulation, or a structural leak—typically falls on the property owner. They need to send a technician to inspect the AC unit and the wall cavity.

While waiting for management, improve air circulation immediately. Move the wardrobe a few inches from the wall and use a fan to dry the area. Run a dehumidifier in the room if you have one. If the building is unresponsive or the problem is extensive, a professional inspection is advised to identify the mold species and moisture source definitively, as some types require specific remediation protocols.
