Black mold in shower grout: DIY or pro in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah Park villa for about 3 years and just noticed these black spots growing along the grout on the shower tiles. The smell is pretty strong whenever we open the bathroom door, and it seems to be getting worse. I’m worried it’s spreading behind the walls. Is this a job for a professional cleaning company, or can I handle it myself with products from ACE? What’s a rough estimate for a pro to fix something like this in Dubai?

Black mold in shower grout is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and constant condensation from hot showers. If the smell is strong and it's spreading, it's likely more than surface level. The porous grout often allows mold to penetrate deeply, making DIY cleaning a temporary fix.

For a small, surface-level patch, a concentrated hydrogen peroxide solution from ACE can be effective. Scrub thoroughly and ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated for several hours afterward. However, a persistent, strong-smelling recurrence suggests the mold has infiltrated the grout or the substrate behind the tiles. In villas, this can indicate a moisture issue within the wall cavity, possibly from a tiny leak or insufficient waterproofing.

A professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent. They use moisture meters and borescopes to check behind tiles without damage. Remediation involves removing contaminated grout, treating the underlying structure, and reapplying waterproofing—a process requiring specific expertise to prevent rapid regrowth. For a standard shower enclosure, professional remediation is a multi-day process focused on permanent moisture control, not just cleaning. You should request an onsite assessment for an accurate scope and quotation.
