Mold from AC on clothes; who to call to fix?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom closet has been leaking a little, and I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes to find a bunch of black, fuzzy spots on a couple of my jackets. This is in our villa in Jumeirah, and with the humidity rising again, I'm panicked about it spreading to everything else. What's the best way to clean the clothes and, more importantly, who should I call to properly fix the AC unit to make sure this never happens again?

First, isolate the affected clothes in a plastic bag to prevent spores from spreading. For non-porous items like leather or plastic parts on jackets, wipe them with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover. For porous fabrics like wool or down, dry cleaning is often the most effective solution to properly treat the contamination.

The root cause is the leaking AC unit, which is creating a constant moisture source in the humid Dubai climate. This must be addressed immediately. You need a certified HVAC technician, not just a general handyman. They must fix the leak—likely a clogged condensate drain line or a faulty drain pan—and then fully sanitize the entire internal unit and ductwork to kill any existing microbial growth.

For peace of mind and to ensure the remediation was effective, consider an independent indoor environmental professional. They can perform post-remediation verification testing, which often includes air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab. This is the only way to confirm the spore count in your closet has returned to a normal level and the problem is truly resolved.
