Is bathroom mold urgent for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the mold that's been slowly spreading on the ceiling of our master bathroom in JVC. It started as a few black spots after the humidity last month but now it's a pretty big patch near the shower. We run the exhaust fan but it doesn't seem to help much. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a cleaner from ACE?

Bathroom mold can certainly be a trigger for persistent coughing in children, especially if they have underlying allergies or sensitivities. The humid Dubai climate accelerates mold growth, making bathrooms a prime location for colonies to establish and release spores into the air.

For a small, new patch, a thorough DIY cleaning with a dedicated mold remover can be effective. However, given the description—a large, spreading patch on the ceiling that persists despite your exhaust fan—this indicates a more established issue. The exhaust may be underpowered or there could be moisture trapped within the ceiling itself from a slow leak or condensation from the AC ducting above, which is common here. Surface cleaning will not address this hidden source.

With children experiencing symptoms, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and the mold species. Some types, like Aspergillus, are more commonly associated with respiratory irritation and are frequently identified in UAE homes. A proper assessment will determine if the growth is superficial or has penetrated the building materials, which dictates the remediation method. In many cases, addressing the underlying humidity or leak is the only permanent solution to prevent recurrence and protect your indoor air quality.
