Could bedroom mold be causing my morning sore throat?« Back to Previous Page

The AC unit in our bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been leaking a bit for the last couple of months. I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat that goes away soon after I leave the apartment. I just pulled back the corner of the mattress and found a few small black spots on the wall behind it. Could this mold be the cause of my morning symptoms, and how urgent is it to get it professionally cleaned?

Yes, the mold behind your mattress is very likely the cause of your morning sore throat and congestion. The symptoms that resolve when you leave the apartment are a strong indicator of an indoor air quality issue. The AC unit's persistent leak has created a perfect environment for mold growth by providing constant moisture, which is amplified by Dubai's high humidity.

This situation should be addressed with some urgency. The proximity to your sleeping area means you are exposed for 6-8 hours nightly. Ongoing exposure can lead to worsening respiratory irritation and allergic reactions. The Dubai climate, especially during summer months, causes condensation and accelerates mold growth behind walls where it's not immediately visible.

For a case like this, a professional inspection is recommended. They can assess the full extent of the growth behind the wall and inside the AC unit itself, which is a common source for spreading spores. The cleaning process must include fixing the AC leak at its source, then properly containing and removing the contaminated materials to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home during remediation.

Until it's handled, improve ventilation in the room as much as possible and keep the AC drip line clear to minimize further leakage. A proper remediation will not only remove the visible mold but also identify the species to understand any specific health risks.
