Black spots in closet: urgent or wait for weekend?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a bunch of black spots over the last couple of weeks, and my clothes are starting to smell damp. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried it’s gotten into the walls after all the recent humidity. Is this something I need to call a professional about immediately, or can it wait until the weekend?

This sounds like active mold growth and should be addressed within days, not weeks. The combination of high Dubai humidity and a cool external wall creates the perfect environment for condensation and mold, especially in older Jumeirah buildings.

For now, move your clothes to a dry area to prevent further contamination and improve air circulation by leaving the closet door open. Do not attempt to wipe the mold yourself, as this can disturb spores and spread them.

Given the location on an outside wall, there is a significant possibility the mold has penetrated the wall cavity, which requires professional assessment to determine the full extent. A proper inspection will use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the moisture source. Remediation often involves controlled removal of affected materials and addressing the underlying dampness, which is common here due to our climate-driven condensation issues.

You can manage it until the weekend if you ensure good ventilation, but I would not wait longer. Look for a provider that offers a detailed assessment and can explain the moisture source, not just a surface cleaning.
