How to remove closet mold and prevent it in humid JLT?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. We’re in a high-rise in Jumeirah Lakes Towers and it's been incredibly humid lately even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to treat this existing mold and what can I do to stop it from coming back for good?

That black speckle pattern is classic for closet mold in Dubai's climate, particularly in high-rises facing the water. It's likely growing due to a combination of stagnant air, high humidity, and the organic material in your winter clothes.

For treatment, start by isolating the affected clothes and laundering them with a mold-killing additive. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe down the closet walls and shelves with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Dry the area completely with a fan.

To prevent recurrence, you must address the humidity. The constant AC running may not be enough if the closet is a dead air space. A standalone dehumidifier is the most effective immediate solution for a bedroom in JLT. Keep the closet doors slightly ajar to improve air circulation. Consider using moisture-absorbing products like silica gel desiccant bags inside the closet, especially during the more humid summer months.

For a permanent fix, the underlying issue is likely inadequate ventilation or a slight temperature differential causing condensation. A professional inspection can identify if this is a localized problem or part of a larger indoor air quality issue, which is common in sealed high-rises. They can use thermal imaging to find cold spots and moisture meters to quantify the humidity level, providing a targeted solution.
