Small black mold in closet: urgent or DIY with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots appearing on the back wall of our bedroom closet in Jumeirah Village Circle. It's not a huge patch yet, but I'm starting to get a slight musty smell when I open the door, and with the humidity rising again, I'm worried it will spread quickly. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution first?

Small black spots with a musty smell in a JVC closet require immediate attention due to Dubai's high humidity, which causes mold to spread quickly. A vinegar solution is a common first step for a very small, surface-level patch (under one square foot) that has appeared recently.

For a DIY attempt, use distilled white vinegar in a spray bottle, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a brush and dry the area completely. However, this only addresses surface mold you can see. The real concern is often hidden mold growing inside the wall due to a condensation leak from an AC pipe or a minor internal leak, which vinegar cannot reach.

Given the musty smell—a strong indicator of active growth beyond the surface—and the upcoming humid season, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden moisture source. Without fixing that, the mold will return. In many villa communities, this is a recurring issue tied to AC condensation drain blockages. A proper remediation will involve identifying the source, isolating the area, and removing the contaminated materials, followed by verification to ensure it's resolved.
