Bathroom grout mold: DIY bleach or call a professional?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our guest bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a persistent damp smell even though we keep the window open. It’s gotten worse since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. Is this something I can tackle with a bleach spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning service to handle it properly?

That black grout is classic bathroom mold, and the damp smell confirms it's active. Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer months, creates a perfect breeding ground in showers where condensation accumulates daily. While a supermarket bleach spray can remove the visible surface stain, it often fails to kill the roots embedded deep within the porous grout, leading to a quick return.

For a small, surface-level patch, a thorough DIY scrub with a dedicated grout cleaner can be a temporary fix. The critical step is moisture control; run the exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and physically wipe down wet tiles and glass to reduce condensation. If the staining covers a large area, has a fuzzy texture, or the musty odor persists despite cleaning and ventilation, the growth is likely extensive.

In such cases, the underlying issue often extends behind the tiles. Professional assessment is recommended to determine the extent using moisture meters and, if necessary, surface or air tests to identify the mold species. Remediation involves specialized antimicrobial agents that penetrate deeper than consumer products and addressing the source of moisture, which is crucial for a permanent solution in our climate.
