Should I clean small AC mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for the last couple of weeks, and now I’m seeing a small patch of black mold on the base of the wall behind the curtain. It’s only about the size of my hand so far. With the humidity rising again, how quickly do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can clean myself first?

In Dubai's climate, that small leak creates a perfect storm for mold: constant moisture from condensation meets high ambient humidity. The visible patch on the wall is likely just the surface manifestation; the real concern is what's growing inside the wall cavity or under the carpet from the sustained dampness.

For a patch that size, a thorough DIY cleaning is possible if the source is fixed. First, stop the AC leak completely—this is non-negotiable. Then, wearing an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the wall with a mixture of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't prevent regrowth and can damage porous materials.

However, professional assessment is strongly advised. The primary risk isn't the surface mold you see, but the potential hidden colonization in the wall's insulation or the carpet backing, which you cannot properly assess or remediate yourself. In many Dubai villas and apartments, this internal damage can compromise building integrity and indoor air quality quickly. A proper inspection, often involving moisture meters and possibly thermal imaging, determines the full extent of the problem. For a verified resolution, remediation should include removing affected porous materials like damaged drywall or carpet padding, followed by HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment to prevent recurrence.
