Safely remove mold from toys near kids in humid apartment?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past two weeks, and I just pulled their wooden toy chest away from the wall in our Deira apartment and found a patch of black and green fuzzy mold spreading behind it. I think it might be from the humidity, but I'm really worried about their health. What's the safest and most effective way to clean this and make sure it doesn't come back, especially with little ones around?

First, remove the children and any porous items like plush toys from the room and increase ventilation by opening windows if the outside humidity is lower than inside. The fuzzy growth indicates active colonies that are releasing spores.

For the toy chest's hard surfaces, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (one part bleach to ten parts water) can be effective. Scrub the visible mold off, then wipe the area down with the solution and allow it to dry completely. Never mix cleaning agents. For any porous wooden toys that show mold, consider discarding them, as the hyphae can penetrate deep into the material and cannot be fully cleaned.

The core issue is the humidity and condensation that allowed this to happen, especially with the chest against the wall in a Deira apartment. This is a common problem here due to our high ambient humidity interacting with cold walls from constant AC use. To prevent recurrence, you must keep the chest and other furniture several inches away from exterior walls to promote air circulation. A dehumidifier in that room can help maintain humidity levels below 60%.

Given the children's persistent coughing, the mold behind the chest may be part of a larger issue within the apartment. Surface cleaning addresses the visible problem but not the potential for hidden growth inside walls or AC units, which requires professional inspection and air testing to identify all contamination sources and protect your family's health.
