Urgent to fix black grout and damp smell in bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom in Jumeirah has started turning black over the last couple of weeks, and now there's a persistent damp smell in the air even though I run the exhaust fan. I've noticed my sinuses have been really stuffy in the mornings since it started. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

That black grout and damp smell indicate an active mold issue, which is very common in Dubai bathrooms due to the high humidity and condensation from showers. Your sinus congestion is a direct sign it's affecting your indoor air quality.

For a small, surface-level patch, a DIY approach with a dedicated mold remover (not just bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots) can be a first step. However, the persistent damp smell suggests the moisture source isn't being controlled, likely meaning mold has penetrated deeper behind the tiles or into the wall. This is beyond the scope of surface cleaning.

Given your symptoms and the rapid spread, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters to locate the source of the leak or condensation and can determine if the wall cavity is affected. In many villas here, the issue stems from a failed shower seal or pipe condensation, not just surface moisture.

A proper remediation would involve addressing the water source, removing the compromised grout, and treating the area with professional-grade biocides to prevent rapid regrowth in our climate. Without this, the problem will almost certainly return.
