Is black mold near AC vent making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I’ve just discovered a bunch of black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom, which is right next to the AC vent. I’m in a villa in Mirdif and we had that really heavy dew a few weeks back where everything felt damp for days. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar spray?

Black mold near an AC vent, combined with your children's persistent cough, is a situation that warrants immediate professional assessment. The recent heavy dew in Mirdif created ideal conditions for mold growth, as high humidity allows spores to thrive on dust and organic material in your AC system and on cool walls.

While vinegar can clean surface mildew on non-porous tiles, it is not effective for porous walls or for addressing the root cause inside your ductwork. The risk here is that the AC is likely circulating contaminated air. For children, this exposure commonly exacerbates respiratory issues like coughing, congestion, and allergies.

Handling it yourself can disturb the colony, releasing a higher concentration of spores into your home. A proper inspection involves using a borescope to look inside the AC unit and ducts, identifying the moisture source, and taking air/surface samples for a microbiology lab to identify the species. This is critical, as not all black mold is the notorious Stachybotrys, but proper identification dictates the remediation protocol.

Given the health symptoms and the location, this is urgent. You need a certified professional to contain the area, remove the contaminated materials safely, and remediate the AC system to stop recurrence. Look for providers who can show verifiable before-and-after lab reports, not just a visual clean.
