How to clean and prevent closet mold in UAE humidity?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's an interior wall, and we're on the 15th floor in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. I'm really worried it's going to ruin our things and spread.
What's the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back, considering the UAE's humidity?

Black spots in a closet are typically mold, and it's a common issue here due to the high humidity. First, assess the extent. For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself.
Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a microfiber cloth dampened with white vinegar or a diluted detergent solution. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the color and doesn't kill the roots. Dry the area immediately and completely with a separate clean, dry cloth. For your winter clothes, sun-drying them for a few hours can kill any spores. The cause is almost always excess moisture. In a sealed closet with organic materials like cotton clothes, condensation from the AC's constant cooling cycle creates a perfect breeding ground. To prevent recurrence, you must improve air circulation. Leave the closet door ajar periodically or install a small battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber inside. Ensure the room's AC vents aren't blocked and are directing air into the space. If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the source may be a hidden leak in the wall or a more significant condensation issue. In such cases, a professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging is needed to identify the hidden moisture source, which is critical for a permanent solution. |
