Is black mold under my AC dangerous for health?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a little onto the carpet for a while, but I just moved the bed and found a big black patch of mold underneath. It’s been extra humid lately and the musty smell is really strong in there now. My throat has been feeling scratchy in the mornings and I'm starting to worry. What's the best way to deal with this safely, and should I be getting my family checked by a doctor?

Yes, black mold under your AC is a health concern and warrants immediate action. The combination of a water leak, high Dubai humidity, and porous material like carpet creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. The musty smell and your scratchy throat are common indicators of exposure.

Health risks vary by individual. Most people experience allergy-like symptoms: nasal congestion, throat irritation, coughing, or eye irritation. Infants, the elderly, and those with asthma or compromised immune systems can have more severe reactions. While the term "black mold" is alarming, the specific species must be identified to assess the true risk, as many common black-colored molds are irritants rather than severe toxins.

For safe handling, do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold will release a massive amount of spores into your bedroom air. The first step is to stop the source—have an HVAC technician repair the AC leak immediately. Isolate the area by keeping the door closed.

Due to the size of the patch and its location on carpet (which is nearly impossible to fully remediate), professional mold remediation is strongly advised for this scenario. They will contain the area, remove the contaminated carpet section, and use HEPA filtration to clean the air. A follow-up test by a microbiology lab is the only way to confirm the space is safe.

Regarding a doctor's visit, it is prudent to mention the mold exposure to your family physician, especially if symptoms persist after you've addressed the problem. They can advise if any specific checks are needed based on your family's health history.
