Is this mold urgent or can I clean it myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry. I was just moving some storage boxes in the spare bedroom closet of our villa in Jumeirah and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots all over the back wall and on some of our winter clothes. It’s been so humid lately I think it’s just gotten out of control. How urgent is this, do I need to call a professional cleanup service immediately or is it something I can handle myself this weekend?

Based on your description, this is a situation that warrants professional assessment and likely professional remediation. The combination of visible growth on structural walls, contamination of porous materials like clothing, and the health symptoms in your household points to a significant issue.
In Dubai's climate, the high humidity, especially during summer months, creates a perfect environment for mold to proliferate rapidly inside villas, often in closets and behind furniture where air circulation is poor. What you see on the surface is frequently just a fraction of the actual growth, which can penetrate into drywall and insulation. Attempting to clean this yourself risks disturbing the colony and releasing a large number of spores into your home's air, potentially worsening your children's coughing. DIY methods with bleach or vinegar are often ineffective on porous surfaces and fail to address the root moisture problem. The urgency is high due to the health symptoms. A professional inspection will identify the moisture source—likely condensation or a minor, undetected leak—and use containment procedures to safely remove the contaminated materials, including the affected drywall and clothing. They will also provide verification, typically through lab analysis, that the environment has been returned to a safe state. For a case involving structural elements and health impacts, engaging a company with certified methodologies and their own microbiology lab is the most reliable path to resolving it. |
