Is black mold in closet dangerous for a newborn?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years in a villa in Jumeirah and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC has been running non-stop. We have a newborn and I'm getting really worried about how quickly this can become a bigger health hazard.
Is this something I need to get an inspector for immediately, or can it wait a few weeks?

Black mold in a closet, especially with a newborn, should be addressed quickly. The primary concern is the infant's developing respiratory system, which is more vulnerable to airborne spores that can cause irritation, congestion, or exacerbate allergies.
Given Dubai's high humidity and constant AC use, this small patch is a symptom of a moisture issue, likely condensation from the cold wall meeting warm, humid air. The AC running non-stop manages the room's temperature but can create these microclimates of condensation where mold thrives. It can spread if the underlying moisture isn't controlled. For a newborn in the home, I would not recommend waiting weeks. While a professional inspection is the most thorough way to identify the moisture source and the full extent, you can start with immediate steps. Move any clothing or items away from the area. Wipe the visible patch with a solution of diluted white vinegar, but be aware this only addresses the surface growth you can see. To prevent recurrence, improve air circulation in the closet—leave the door ajar and ensure the room's AC vent isn't blocked. A dehumidifier in the bedroom can also help significantly. If the mold returns quickly, appears to be more extensive behind the wall, or if anyone experiences persistent respiratory symptoms, a professional assessment with air and surface sampling is advised to identify the species and guide appropriate remediation. |
