Mold in closet: DIY fix or call a pro immediately?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall, has started to smell really damp and earthy over the past couple of weeks. I just pulled out some winter clothes and found a few jackets with fuzzy black spots on the shoulders. We keep the AC running most of the time, but with the recent humidity, I'm getting worried. Is this something I need to get a professional to look at immediately, or are there DIY steps I should try first?

With fuzzy growth on clothes and a persistent damp smell, you're right to be concerned. In Dubai's climate, this is a common issue in closets on interior walls, as they are often colder than the room, causing condensation from the AC to form and create a hidden moisture source.

For a closet with visible growth, DIY steps have limited effectiveness. You can wipe down surfaces with a vinegar solution and discard heavily contaminated items to prevent spore spread. However, this only addresses the surface-level symptom, not the underlying moisture problem. The wall cavity itself may be harboring the main colony, which you cannot see or effectively treat yourself.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the exact source of the condensation or potential water intrusion within the wall. This is critical because if the moisture source isn't found and corrected, the mold will return. A proper inspection will determine the extent of the problem and identify the species, as some types common in humid climates can cause more significant indoor air quality issues. Companies with their own microbiology lab can provide the definitive identification needed to plan an effective remediation strategy.
