Can I clean black bathroom mold myself in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has started turning black, and there's a really damp, earthy smell that hits you when you first walk in. We’re in a villa in Jumeirah and I know the humidity has been brutal lately. Is this something I can tackle myself with bleach and a scrub brush, or do I need to call in a professional mold removal company here in Dubai?

It depends on the extent. For a small, surface-level patch, you can attempt cleaning with a dedicated grout cleaner or a solution of vinegar and baking soda. Bleach is often ineffective as it only removes the surface colour and can feed the mould’s root system deeper in the porous grout.

However, the damp, earthy smell you describe strongly suggests the mould has penetrated beyond the surface. Dubai's high humidity, especially in enclosed showers with poor ventilation, allows moisture to seep into the grout and the wall behind the tiles. Scrubbing the surface will not address this hidden growth or the underlying moisture problem, which is why the mould typically returns within a few weeks.

For persistent, smelly mould or if it covers more than a few square feet, a professional assessment is wise. They use moisture meters to locate the source of dampness—often a failed shower seal or condensation from AC ducts—and can perform lab tests to identify the species. Remediation then involves removing the compromised grout, treating the substrate, and fixing the moisture issue to prevent recurrence. Given you're in a villa, ensuring proper bathroom ventilation is critical to managing the intense local humidity.
