Should we test for mold before safe removal in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Mirdif has been great, but since the heavy rains in February, the guest room closet on the ground floor has developed these black speckles. My youngest son has been waking up with a stuffy nose and we’re worried it’s connected. What’s the most effective and child-safe way to handle mold removal here in Dubai, and should we get a professional to test it first?

Testing is highly recommended before any removal, especially with a child experiencing symptoms. The black speckles could be one of several common molds, and their potential to produce allergens or irritants varies significantly. A professional inspection with lab analysis identifies the species and the concentration of spores in the air, which is the only way to confirm if it's the cause of the stuffy nose and to plan a safe, effective remediation strategy.

For a situation like a ground-floor closet after heavy rain, the source is likely moisture intrusion from the outside or a hidden leak, not just condensation. A proper inspection will use a moisture meter to find the exact water source that must be fixed first; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of how well you clean. In Dubai's climate, where we run AC year-round, this often points to issues with external wall sealing or a compromised damp proof course that the rains exposed.

While small surface mold on non-porous materials can sometimes be cleaned with a detergent solution, the presence of symptoms and the potential for hidden growth within the wall or behind the closet make a DIY approach risky. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize a high volume of spores throughout the home. A certified professional will set up containment barriers, use HEPA filtration to clean the air, and safely remove affected materials if necessary, ensuring the problem is resolved at its root. For child-safe removal, this controlled approach is essential.
