How to clean black mold in wardrobe and health risks?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our villa in Mirdif for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots in the back of the walk-in wardrobe where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall and even on some of the jackets, and the smell is really musty. What's the most effective way to clean this ourselves, and should we be worried about our health?

Black mould in a Dubai wardrobe is a common issue due to the high humidity, which often leads to condensation on cooler exterior walls, especially behind furniture. The musty smell indicates active microbial growth. For your health, the primary risks are irritation—sneezing, itchy eyes, and worsened allergies or asthma, particularly for sensitive individuals.

To clean it yourself, first ensure safety. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Isolate the area by closing the wardrobe door and sealing the bottom with a towel to prevent spores from spreading. Discard any heavily contaminated porous items like cardboard boxes. For clothing, a hot wash with a mould-killing additive can often salvage them.

For the wall and hard surfaces, a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water) can be effective. Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid simply spraying as this can aerosolize spores. The key is to address the moisture source. In Mirdif villas, this is frequently condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot exterior wall.

After cleaning, a dehumidifier or disposable moisture absorber pots in the wardrobe can help prevent recurrence. Improving air circulation by occasionally leaving the door ajar is also critical.

If the mould covers an area larger than one square meter, has caused significant staining into the wall material (plasterboard/gypsum), or if anyone in the household is experiencing persistent respiratory issues, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can use moisture meters to find the exact source of dampness and conduct lab testing to identify the mould species, which determines the appropriate remediation protocol. In many cases, the wall cavity itself needs to be inspected for hidden growth.
