What's the best dehumidifier for a damp bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet on the outside wall of our villa in Jumeirah has started to get a fuzzy black mold on leather bags and shoes I stored there. It seems to flare up whenever we have a humid spell, and even though I run the AC constantly, the closet always feels a bit damp. What’s the best dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can get to specifically prevent mold in a small, enclosed space like this?

The issue you're describing is classic for exterior walls in Dubai villas, particularly during humid spells. The wall's temperature difference with the cooled interior air creates condensation inside the wall cavity, which then migrates into your closet, making it a perpetual dampness source no amount of AC can fully overcome.
For a small, enclosed space like a closet, a compact electric desiccant dehumidifier is typically the most effective solution. These are quieter and perform better in the cooler temperatures of an air-conditioned room compared to refrigerant models. Look for a unit with a capacity rated for the size of your closet; a small 10-12L/day model is usually sufficient. The key is that it must run continuously to keep the relative humidity below 60%, the threshold where mold stops growing. Silica gel-based moisture absorbers (like those available at ACE or online) are a passive, non-electric alternative. They can help but are often overwhelmed by the constant moisture seepage from a damp wall and require very frequent replacement in our climate. Ultimately, these are containment measures. The dampness feeling indicates a persistent moisture source. A professional inspection can identify if this is due to inadequate insulation in the wall, a minor leak, or insufficient vapour barriers, which are common issues here. Addressing that root cause is the only permanent solution. For valuable items like leather goods, relocating them until the wall is assessed is the safest interim step to prevent further damage. |
