Safe DIY removal of black mold behind toilet?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I finally checked behind the toilet in our master bathroom in our villa in Arabian Ranches. I found a patch of black mold that seems to have been growing there for a while, probably from the humidity. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of it myself without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

Start by identifying the source of moisture. In Dubai's humid climate, the most common cause is condensation from your AC's cold surfaces meeting warm air, or a small, persistent leak from the toilet's water supply or seal.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can handle it safely. First, ensure the room is well-ventilated; open a window and run the bathroom exhaust fan. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses to avoid inhaling spores or getting them on your skin.

Mix a solution of one part distilled white vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle. Vinegar is effective against over 80% of mold species and is non-toxic. Avoid using bleach, as it only removes the surface colour and can release harmful fumes, especially in a confined space. Spray the area thoroughly and let it sit for at least an hour to penetrate and kill the mold at the root.

After the solution has sat, scrub the area with a stiff-bristled brush. Wipe everything clean with damp paper towels, which you should immediately seal in a plastic bag and dispose of.

If the mold returns quickly, if the affected area is large, or if it has penetrated porous materials like drywall or wood, this indicates a deeper issue. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the hidden moisture source and assess the extent. They can also perform lab testing to confirm the mold type, which is important information if your children are experiencing respiratory symptoms.
