Can I clean mold on clothes myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Jumeirah has been super humid since the recent foggy mornings. I just pulled out our winter clothes from the storage room and found a bunch of black fuzzy spots on a couple of leather jackets and some sweaters in the back of the cupboard. I'm worried it's spreading. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or something from ACE, or do I need to call in a professional mold remediation company?

It depends on the extent of the mold and the fabric. For a few isolated items you've just discovered, a DIY approach is often possible. However, given Dubai's persistent high humidity—especially during fog season—the underlying cause is likely elevated moisture in that storage room, which means the problem could easily recur.
For washable fabrics like cotton sweaters, a hot wash cycle with detergent can remove visible growth. For delicate items like leather jackets, a solution of white vinegar or rubbing alcohol (70% isopropyl) dabbed on the affected area can be effective. Always test on an inconspicuous spot first and dry the items completely in direct sunlight, which is a powerful natural disinfectant. If the mold is widespread, has a strong musty odor, or has penetrated deeply into the materials, professional assessment is recommended. This is particularly true if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities. The visible mold on your clothes is likely just the tip of the iceberg; the spores will be airborne and settling elsewhere. A professional can use moisture meters to find the source of the dampness—often condensation from an AC duct or a poorly ventilated space—and provide remediation that addresses the root cause to prevent it from spreading further. |
