Can I remove wall mold myself or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black spots growing on the wall behind our wardrobe. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the room just feels damp all the time. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar solution, or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check for a bigger problem?

That black patch behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation and trapped humidity, which is very common in Dubai villas, especially during the more humid months. The wall behind large furniture often gets cold from the AC, and when warm, moist air seeps in, it creates the perfect damp environment for mold to grow.

For a small patch (under one square foot/30cm x 30cm), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. A vinegar solution can be effective for surface cleaning, but it won't address the root cause. You must find and fix the moisture source. Move the wardrobe away from the wall to improve air circulation and wipe down the wall regularly to prevent condensation buildup.

However, the fact that the room feels "damp all the time" suggests a more systemic issue. This could be due to a hidden plumbing leak, rising damp from the foundation, or insufficient insulation causing persistent condensation. In these cases, a DIY approach often just removes the visible symptom while the hidden problem continues to grow, potentially inside the wall cavity.

A professional inspection is recommended to identify the true source of the moisture. They use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to see what's happening inside the walls without causing damage. This is crucial for a lasting solution. If the inspection reveals widespread contamination or a complex moisture issue, professional remediation following standards like the IICRC S520 is the safest way to ensure it is handled correctly and your indoor air quality is protected.
