Can I clean this closet mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our winter clothes. I’m worried it’s mold, especially with the humidity lately. How urgent is it that we get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Black spots in a closet, especially with Dubai's recent humidity, are almost certainly mold. The constant air conditioning creates significant temperature differences between cool walls and warm, stagnant air, leading to condensation and mold growth in enclosed spaces like closets.

For a small, surface-level area (under one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mold root structure while only bleaching the surface color. Instead, use a vinegar solution or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner. Scrub the area, ensure it is completely dry, and address the moisture source—often this means improving air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar or using a moisture absorber.

However, professional remediation is strongly advised in several cases specific to your situation. If the mold is on drywall, as closet walls often are, the roots can penetrate deeply where surface cleaning is ineffective. The proximity to your winter clothing is a major concern; mold spores can contaminate fabrics, leading to ongoing air quality issues and damage to your belongings. A professional inspection can determine the extent of the problem, identify the species (as some are more problematic than others), and ensure it is removed at the root with containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination throughout your home. For a closet used for storage, this thorough approach is often the most effective long-term solution.
