How to clean black mold and prevent spread in bathroom?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the ceiling meets the wall above the shower in our Marina apartment. It’s been extra humid lately and the bathroom’s ventilation fan has always been a bit weak. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, and should I be worried about it spreading into the AC ducts?

Bathroom mold in Dubai's climate is very common due to the high humidity, especially during summer months. The patch you describe is likely surface mold feeding on condensation from your shower. For a small area, you can clean it yourself safely.
Mix a solution of distilled white vinegar and water (1:1 ratio) or use a dedicated hydrogen peroxide-based cleaner. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and doesn't kill the roots. Wear gloves and a mask. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit for an hour, then wipe it clean. Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after. To prevent regrowth, the weak ventilation fan is your primary issue. Run it for at least 30 minutes after every shower. Wiping down wet walls and keeping the shower door open to air out also helps significantly. A dehumidifier can be effective if humidity persists. It is unlikely the mold has spread into your AC ducts from a bathroom ceiling patch, as the systems are typically separate. However, persistent high humidity throughout the apartment can contribute to mold growth elsewhere. If the mold covers an area larger than one square meter, returns quickly after multiple cleanings, or you notice a musty smell in other rooms, a professional inspection with air and surface sampling is recommended to identify the species and check for hidden growth. |
