Urgent: black mold in closet needs immediate treatment?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right on the wall. It's been extra humid lately and the musty smell is really strong when I open the closet doors. Is this something I need to get treated like, this week, or can it wait until my landlord's maintenance does their next round in a few weeks?

That pattern of black spots with a strong musty smell indicates active mold growth, almost certainly fueled by the recent high humidity. This requires prompt attention and should not wait several weeks.

In Dubai's climate, interior wall corners are prime locations for condensation to form, especially if the room's AC is set at a high temperature or the closet is against an exterior wall. The mold is feeding on organic material, which could be dust, the wall material itself, or even clothing. The presence of a strong odor means it has established a significant colony.

For a confirmed case like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify the moisture source and the extent of the growth. Remediation involves more than just wiping the visible spots; the underlying cause must be addressed to prevent immediate regrowth. In many cases, a small section of drywall may need to be removed to treat the cavity behind it.

You should notify your landlord immediately. While regulations don't specify a strict timeframe for response, a documented moisture issue affecting indoor air quality typically obligates them to act promptly. In the interim, keep the closet doors open to improve air circulation and ensure your AC is running consistently to lower indoor humidity levels. Avoid disturbing the area, as this can release spores into the air.
