How to remove mold in Dubai and inform landlord?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been incredibly humid in Dubai lately. What's the best way to clean this ourselves, and is this something I need to report to my landlord in Dubai?

Clean the visible mold yourself using a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mixture (1 part bleach to 4 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly and allow it to dry completely. For the wall to stay dry, you must address the source of moisture, which is likely condensation from the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid exterior wall.

Under Dubai rental law (Law No. 26 of 2007), structural issues like persistent dampness or leaks that cause mold are typically the landlord's responsibility to repair. You should formally report the issue to your landlord or property management company. Provide clear photos and a written description, stating that the mold is due to a suspected insulation or condensation issue with the exterior wall. This creates a paper trail and obligates them to investigate and fix the root cause, preventing it from returning after you clean it.

If the patch is larger than one square meter, keeps returning after cleaning, or you or family members experience persistent allergies or respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is recommended to assess hidden growth within the wall cavity and identify the exact moisture source.
