Black mold causing persistent cough in Sharjah?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black speckles growing along the corner where the wall meets the ceiling in our Sharjah bedroom. My husband has been waking up with a stuffy head and a cough that won't go away for the last month, and I'm starting to get worried. Is this kind of persistent cough a common reaction to the kind of mold we get here, or should we be looking for another cause?

Yes, the persistent cough and congestion you describe are common reactions to mold exposure in this climate, particularly from the types found in Sharjah homes. The black speckles at the wall-ceiling junction strongly suggest a condensation issue, which is a frequent source of mold growth here.

The UAE's high humidity, combined with continuous AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold. Cold air from the AC unit hits the warmer surface of the exterior wall, causing condensation to form inside that corner. This constant dampness allows mold to thrive. The most common types here, like Cladosporium and Aspergillus, are known to cause the exact respiratory symptoms your husband is experiencing—stuffy head, persistent cough, and worsened allergies.

While looking for other causes like dust or seasonal allergies is reasonable, the timing and location make mold a primary suspect. For a confirmed diagnosis, a professional inspection with surface sampling is recommended. The sample is analyzed in a lab to identify the species, which determines the appropriate remediation method and helps assess the health risk, especially if anyone in the household is immunocompromised. Remediation involves fixing the moisture source (often improving insulation or ventilation) and properly removing the contaminated material.
