Can I remove black mold myself or is it urgent?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and the room always feels a bit damp. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's going to spread quickly.
How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a vinegar solution from Carrefour?

It depends on the size and cause. For a small patch (under one square foot) you can likely handle it yourself, but the underlying dampness must be addressed or it will return.
Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution. Immediately dispose of any moldy porous materials like cardboard boxes or damaged fabrics. The urgency comes from Dubai's high humidity, which allows mold to spread quickly if the moisture source isn't fixed. Your description of the wall facing outside and constant dampness suggests a possible condensation issue, which is very common here due to the extreme temperature differential between air-conditioned interiors and the external heat. Simply wiping the visible mold won't stop it from recurring. If the patch is larger than a square foot, if you smell a persistent musty odor, or if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and extent. They can perform a humidity test on that wall to see if insulation or other repairs are needed. In many cases, the root cause is a hidden leak or insufficient insulation, which requires more than a surface clean. |
