Is this mold dangerous for my baby's room?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed these dark, splotchy patches spreading in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. We have a six-month-old baby sleeping in our room, and I’m starting to panic. Is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can it wait a few days for a regular handyman to look at it?

Dark splotches on an exterior wall during a humid period strongly indicate a mold issue, which is common in Dubai's climate due to condensation. With a six-month-old in the room, a professional inspection is strongly recommended over a handyman. While not all black-colored mold is the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), its presence in a nursery warrants caution due to a baby's developing respiratory system.

The primary risk for infants is from inhaling mold spores, which can irritate airways, worsen allergies, and potentially lead to coughing or congestion. A general handyman can clean the visible growth but often misses the underlying moisture source and may spread spores. They also lack the tools for proper assessment.

The wall likely has a persistent dampness problem, possibly from a minor leak or thermal bridging where the cool interior meets the humid exterior air, creating condensation inside the wall cavity. Remediation requires fixing this moisture issue first, then safely containing and removing the affected materials.

For a case involving an infant, a professional inspection that includes moisture mapping and potentially air or surface sampling is the most prudent course. This identifies the species and the full extent of the problem, ensuring the remediation plan is scientifically sound. In the meantime, try to keep the baby in a different, well-ventilated room and avoid disturbing the mold, as this releases more spores.
