Is this mold in my closet dangerous to clean myself?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a cluster of black, fuzzy spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it appeared after that period of heavy dew we had a few weeks ago. I'm worried it's making us cough in the mornings. Is this something I can clean myself with a vinegar solution, or do I need to call a professional company to deal with it?

Black mold is a broad term for several species, and not all are equally hazardous. In your specific case, with it appearing on an exterior wall after a period of high humidity, it's highly likely due to condensation, a common issue in Dubai's climate. The associated morning cough suggests the spores are becoming airborne and affecting your indoor air quality.

For a small, isolated patch (under one square foot), cleaning it yourself can be effective if you address the moisture source first. A solution of distilled white vinegar is often recommended, but for porous surfaces like drywall, it may not kill the roots. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area, but be aware that disturbing it without proper containment can spread spores.

However, the bigger concern is the hidden moisture within the wall cavity. If the mold has penetrated the drywall or is growing on the backside from a minor leak or insulation issue, surface cleaning is a temporary fix. The problem will return.

Given the location on an exterior wall and your family's symptoms, a professional inspection is the most prudent step. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to identify the exact condensation point. For remediation, established companies follow IICRC standards, which include containment barriers and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination, ensuring it is fully resolved. This is the only way to verify the moisture source is corrected and the mold is completely removed.
