Is black mold causing my children's cough?« Back to Previous Page
|
My toddler and baby have both developed a persistent cough that seems to get worse at night, and I’ve just found patches of black mould behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom in our Mirdif villa. We had that minor leak from the AC unit a couple of months back and I guess the moisture never fully dried out. Is this type of mould especially dangerous, and should I get the kids checked by a doctor immediately or focus on cleaning the area first?

It is highly plausible the mould is contributing to your children's cough, especially with symptoms worsening at night when they are in that room. The persistent moisture from the AC leak created an ideal environment for mould growth. In Dubai's climate, indoor spaces with poor ventilation and residual dampness are prime locations for such issues.
The term "black mould" is non-specific and refers to many species. While certain types like Stachybotrys chartarum can produce mycotoxins, the more common Cladosporium or Aspergillus are also frequently identified in AC-related dampness here and are significant respiratory irritants. All types can trigger allergic reactions, coughing, and worsen asthma, particularly in infants and toddlers whose systems are more sensitive. You should prioritize both actions simultaneously. A visit to the paediatrician is advised to rule out other causes and address the children's immediate health. Concurrently, you must address the source. For a villa in Mirdif with a prior leak and visible growth, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to assess the full extent, as mould can spread inside wall cavities. DIY cleaning of a small patch with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution can be a temporary measure, but without identifying and rectifying the moisture source (like the AC drip line or condensation buildup), it will return. The inspection will determine if the AC unit itself is contaminated, which is common and would require specialized cleaning. |
