Black mold behind wardrobe: clean myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It’s an interior wall and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call our building management immediately?

That black, fuzzy patch is a common issue in Dubai, especially on interior walls where air circulation is poor. The recent high humidity has almost certainly accelerated its growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Move the wardrobe to isolate the area. Scrub the spot with a mixture of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner, then wipe it down with a damp cloth and allow it to dry completely. The critical step is fixing the moisture source. In this case, it's likely condensation from lack of air circulation. Keep the wardrobe slightly away from the wall and ensure your AC is running adequately to manage indoor humidity.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a strong musty odor, or has visibly penetrated the wall (discoloring the other side or making the drywall soft), do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing large colonies can spread spores. This is when you should contact your building management immediately. Under Dubai municipality regulations, building owners are typically responsible for the structure's integrity, including moisture issues within walls. They should send a technician to investigate for a possible leak from adjacent pipes or the AC drain line, which is a frequent culprit.

For peace of mind on the mold type and the air quality in the room, a professional inspection with lab testing can identify the species and spore count. This is the only way to confirm if it's the notorious Stachybotrys or a less hazardous type, which dictates the remediation approach.
