Recurring black mold in AC vent, DIY or professional?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle has been making us all stuffy, and I just found patches of black mold around the vent in the master bedroom. We’ve been wiping it off with bleach, but it keeps coming back within days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a better cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional mold inspection company to get to the root of it?

Recurring black mold around an AC vent, especially in JVC's high humidity, indicates a deeper moisture source that surface cleaning won't fix. The mold you see is likely just the visible portion of a larger colony thriving inside the ductwork or on the cooling coils, fed by the constant condensation from Dubai's year-round AC operation.

Using bleach is a common but ineffective approach. It can remove surface discoloration temporarily but often fails to kill the root structure of the mold. More critically, it poses inhalation risks in an enclosed space and can corrode metal components within your AC system.

For a recurring problem, a professional inspection is necessary to get to the root cause. The inspection should identify the exact species to assess potential health risks and, more importantly, locate the primary moisture source—be it a clogged drain pan, insufficient insulation causing condensation, or a leak in the ductwork. In many cases, the entire air handling unit and duct system require a comprehensive cleaning by technicians using HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial treatments, not just wiping the vent.

Since the issue is inside the sealed system, a DIY fix isn't advisable. Look for a provider that offers before-and-after testing to verify the remediation's effectiveness, ensuring the spores are measurably reduced and the underlying moisture issue is resolved.
