Is closet mold urgent and spreading inside walls?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Marina apartment has been smelling a bit damp for a while, but after this last humid spell, I just pulled out a winter jacket and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots growing on the back wall. We’ve lived here for 2 years and just noticed this. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and could it be spreading inside the walls?

Yes, it is urgent to address this. In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and continuous AC operation create ideal conditions for mold growth. What you see on the wall surface is almost certainly an indicator of a larger problem, as mold can and does spread behind baseboards, drywall, and within insulation.
The damp smell you've noticed for a while is a key clue that moisture has been accumulating. This is common in closets on exterior walls in apartments, where temperature differences between the air-conditioned room and the unconditioned void behind the wall lead to condensation. The recent humid spell would have significantly accelerated this growth. You should arrange a professional inspection. A certified inspector will use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to determine the extent of the moisture intrusion and whether the mold has colonized the wall cavity. They can identify the source—whether it's condensation, a small pipe leak, or penetration from an external source—which is critical to preventing recurrence. For remediation, surface cleaning is not enough if the mold is inside the walls. Proper removal involves containment of the affected area to prevent spores from spreading to other parts of your home during the process, safe removal of contaminated materials, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment. Once the source of moisture is controlled and the mold is removed, the area can be rebuilt. Addressing it properly now prevents a larger, more disruptive, and costly problem later. |
