Black mold in toddler's room: DIY clean or call pro?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in our Dubai Hills villa has been leaking a bit and now I’ve spotted a patch of black mold in the corner of my toddler’s bedroom closet. We’ve had a lot of humidity lately and I’m really worried about his allergies acting up. What’s the best way to safely clean this myself without risking my family's health, or should I just call a professional company straight away?

A small patch (under one square foot) of surface mold from a recent leak can often be handled with care. For anything larger, or if it's inside the wall or HVAC system, professional remediation is strongly advised for a child's room.
Start by fixing the AC leak; otherwise, the mold will return. For the visible patch, wear an N95 mask and gloves. Mix a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Lightly spray the area, let it sit for an hour, then scrub with a stiff brush. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the colour and doesn't address the root problem in porous materials like drywall. Dry the area completely with a fan to prevent immediate regrowth. Given Dubai's high humidity and that this is in a closet—an area with poor air circulation—the risk of hidden growth behind the wall is significant. The leak suggests a moisture source that has likely penetrated the building envelope. For a toddler with allergies, an unseen spore count could be problematic. A professional inspection with moisture meters and thermal imaging can identify the full extent of the water damage. They can then perform containment and removal, preventing cross-contamination to the rest of the room. Following Dubai Municipality and DHA guidelines, proper remediation includes sealing the area, using HEPA filtration, and verifying clearance with post-remediation testing. This is the safest approach to ensure the environment is truly healthy for your child. |
