AC leak causing black mold and morning sickness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of months, and now I’m seeing black spots growing around the vent on the wall. My husband and I have both been waking up with headaches and a stuffy nose that clears up once we leave for work. Is this mold and could it be the reason we’re feeling so unwell every morning?

Yes, that's very likely mold. The black spots around your AC vent are a classic sign of a mold colony, and your symptoms are a textbook reaction. The continuous leak has created a perfect environment for mold: constant moisture from condensation combined with dust for it to feed on, all hidden inside your AC unit and ductwork.
In Dubai's climate, AC systems are a primary source of indoor mold because they run year-round and generate significant condensation. When a drain line clogs or a unit leaks, that trapped water promotes rapid microbial growth. The headaches and congestion you experience in the morning are a common response to inhaling mold spores and microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) released from the colony overnight in an enclosed space. The fact that your symptoms improve when you leave the room strongly points to the AC unit as the source. You should arrange for a professional inspection immediately. A certified inspector can use a borescope to look inside the AC unit and ductwork to assess the extent of the growth, which is often much worse than what's visible on the wall. They should also perform air quality testing to identify the types of mold present, as some species are more strongly linked to respiratory irritation. Do not attempt to clean this yourself with bleach or store-bought sprays. This can agitate the colony, releasing a large cloud of spores deeper into your home. Proper remediation involves containing the area, using HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatments on the affected surfaces, and, most critically, fixing the underlying AC leak to prevent it from returning. The repair of the leak is non-negotiable; without it, the mold will simply grow back. |
