What's the best dehumidifier for a bedroom closet?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Deira apartment has been smelling damp for a while, and I just pulled out some winter clothes to find a few sweaters covered in black spots. The dehumidifier in the living room doesn't seem to help in that closed-off space. What's the best type of dehumidifier or moisture absorber to leave inside a closet to stop this from happening again?

Black spots on clothes in a Deira apartment almost certainly point to a mold issue, a common problem here due to our high humidity and the condensation that builds up in closed spaces. A dehumidifier is a good first step, but the type matters significantly for a confined area like a closet.

For a small, enclosed closet, a compact electric dehumidifier or a rechargeable desiccant dehumidifier is most effective. Look for a unit with a capacity of 500ml to 1 litre, as it will be the right size and will automatically shut off when full. Alternatively, disposable moisture absorber pods with calcium chloride crystals are a low-cost, non-electric option; they work well for absorbing dampness but require regular replacement.

However, these are mitigation tools, not a complete solution. The damp smell indicates an existing moisture problem that needs addressing. The mold on your clothes is likely also on the closet walls or ceiling. Before placing any new device, you must clean the affected area with a vinegar or hydrogen peroxide solution to remove the active growth. For a persistent issue, a professional inspection can identify if the moisture source is a small leak, condensation from an AC duct, or rising damp, which is crucial for a permanent fix.

Ultimately, the best approach combines moisture control with addressing the root cause. A small dehumidifier will help maintain a dry environment, but for confirmed mold growth, the space must be properly cleaned first to prevent it from returning.
