How to remove and prevent black mold in UAE?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It seems to have gotten worse since the weather turned really humid last month, and I'm worried about our health and our clothes. What's the best way to remove it for good and prevent it from coming back, considering the UAE climate?

Black mold in a closet on an interior wall is a classic sign of condensation and poor air circulation, exacerbated by the UAE's high humidity. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source. In many cases, this is due to a cold spot on the wall where the air conditioning causes condensation to form behind or within the closet.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, or a solution of white vinegar. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture problem or kill the roots. After cleaning, dry the area thoroughly with a fan.

Preventing its return is key. Ensure adequate air circulation in the closet; leaving the door ajar or installing a vented door can help. Using a moisture-absorbing product like silica gel or a small, energy-efficient dehumidifier in the room can combat the dampness. Check that your AC unit is properly sized and maintained, as an overworked unit can create excessive condensation.

If the mold covers a larger area, has a persistent musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, the issue is likely deeper within the wall cavity. In such cases, a professional inspection is necessary to identify hidden moisture and assess the full extent. Remediation often requires controlled removal of affected materials and addressing the underlying humidity source to ensure it does not recur.
