Closet mold in humid weather: DIY clean or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has a bunch of black fuzzy spots on the back wall. I just pulled out my winter clothes and found a couple of jackets with what looks like mold on them. The weird thing is, it’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks even with the AC running constantly. What’s the best way to clean this myself, or should I just call the building maintenance immediately?

That sounds like a classic case of condensation-induced mold, very common here in Dubai, especially during humid periods. The exterior wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the temperature difference between the air-conditioned room and the hot, humid outside air causes moisture to condense inside the wall, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow on the wall and your stored items.
For a small area, you can attempt a DIY clean. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. For non-porous surfaces like the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover can be effective; scrub the area thoroughly. For your jackets, dry cleaning is the most reliable method to kill mold spores and remove stains from fabrics. However, simply cleaning the visible mold doesn't address the root cause: the moisture. If the wall is consistently damp, the mold will return. This is where calling building maintenance is crucial. They need to investigate the insulation and vapor barrier on that exterior wall to prevent ongoing condensation, as per Dubai Municipality building standards. Given the mold has already spread to your belongings, a professional inspection is wise to assess the extent and type of mold, as some species can cause more significant indoor air quality issues. A science-driven approach with lab testing can identify the species and verify that the remediation was successful, ensuring the problem is truly resolved and not just wiped away. |
