Best dehumidifier for a damp closet in humid Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet on the outside wall has started getting these small black speckles on our leather bags and shoes. We’re in an older building in Bur Dubai, and even with the AC running, it feels damp in there, especially since the humidity kicked in a couple of months ago. I’m worried it’s going to ruin more of our stuff and spread.
What’s the most effective dehumidifier or moisture absorber I can put inside a closet here to stop this for good?

That's a classic sign of a localized mould issue, common in older Bur Dubai buildings where external walls can transfer the outdoor humidity and temperature differential causes condensation inside.
For a closet, start with a compact, rechargeable electric dehumidifier. Look for a small model with a Peltier module (thermoelectric) as they are silent, have no compressor, and are ideal for enclosed spaces up to 15-20m³. They automatically shut off when the tank is full. Silica gel-based moisture absorbers are a cheaper alternative but require frequent cartridge replacement and are less effective in Dubai's persistently high humidity. However, a dehumidifier only manages the symptom. The moisture is likely condensing on that cooler outside wall. To stop it for good, you need to address the root cause: the temperature differential. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar and ensuring your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature, ideally below 24°C, to reduce the room's humidity load. For a permanent fix, a professional inspection can identify if wall insulation or a vapour barrier is needed to prevent the condensation from forming in the first place. |
