how to remove black mold anf prevent humidity in wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the walk-in wardrobe, which is on an interior wall. I'm worried it's from the high humidity, maybe made worse by storing clothes in there. What's the most effective way to clean this safely and what dehumidifier or moisture absorber would you recommend to stop it from coming back?

Black mold in a wardrobe on an interior wall is a classic sign of high humidity and poor air circulation, common in Dubai's climate. The confined space and stored textiles create a perfect environment for mold when moisture is present.
For a small patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself safely. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Use a dedicated mold remover spray or a solution of white vinegar and water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture. Scrub the area gently, allow it to dry completely, and dispose of any contaminated materials like cardboard boxes. To prevent recurrence, you must address the moisture source. Since it's an interior wall, the humidity is likely from the air itself. A compact, powerful desiccant dehumidifier is the most effective solution for Dubai's climate, as they perform well in the high ambient humidity levels we experience. Place it inside the wardrobe. Alternatively, moisture-absorbing crystals or boxes can help in very small, enclosed spaces, but a proper dehumidifier is far more effective for long-term control. For any mold covering a larger area, or if it returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to rule out a hidden leak or a more serious condensation issue within the wall cavity. |
