Is black mold urgent to treat ourselves or professionally?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the wall facing the outside. It wasn't there during the last summer, but with all the humidity lately, it's appeared and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose and itchy eyes. How urgent is it that we get a professional to deal with this, or can we handle it ourselves with a bleach solution this weekend?

Black mold in your closet, especially on an exterior wall during Dubai's humid season, is a sign of a moisture issue that needs addressing. The recent humidity has likely caused condensation within the wall cavity, creating the perfect environment for mold. Your husband's symptoms are a common reaction to mold spores in the indoor air.

For a patch smaller than one square meter, a DIY approach can be attempted. Do not use bleach, as it is mostly water and can feed the mold deeper within the drywall. Instead, use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and address the moisture source by improving ventilation—a small dehumidifier or a fan in the closet can help.

However, because this is on an exterior wall and appeared suddenly, the moisture source could be more significant than simple condensation, such as a hidden leak. If the mold returns after cleaning, covers a larger area, or you have health concerns, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden source of the problem, which is critical for a permanent solution. A lab test can also identify the specific mold type, which is valuable information if health symptoms persist. In many Dubai municipalities, remediation work must be conducted to specific standards to ensure the problem is fully resolved.
