Dry black speckles on closet wall: mold and safe removal?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed black, speckled patches appearing along the bottom of our bedroom closet wall, and all our winter clothes inside smell damp. The weird thing is, the wall feels completely dry to the touch. Is this definitely mold, and how do I clean it safely without it just coming back?

That is almost certainly mold, and it's a very common issue in Dubai due to our high humidity levels. Even if the wall feels dry, the problem is likely inside the wall cavity. The constant cycling of air conditioning creates significant temperature differences between the cool indoor air and the warmer walls, leading to condensation you can't see. This trapped moisture is what the mold is feeding on.
For safe removal, start by wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Gently wipe a small area with a cloth dipped in a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. Do not scrub aggressively, as this can release a large number of spores into the air. If the staining wipes away easily, it's likely surface mold. However, if it bleeds deeper into the wall or quickly returns, the moisture source is internal. Simply cleaning the surface will not solve the problem. The key is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In many villas and older buildings here, this is caused by a phenomenon called "cold bridging," where the concrete structure itself gets cold enough to condense ambient humidity. For a persistent issue behind a wall, a professional inspection with a thermal imaging camera and moisture meter is necessary to locate the exact condensation point. A proper remediation would then involve addressing the insulation or sealing the wall to prevent recurrence, followed by HEPA vacuuming and antimicrobial treatment of the affected area. |
