Is my child's cough from hidden black mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for a couple of weeks and we can't figure out why. I was cleaning behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom and found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold on the wall, probably from a hidden condensation leak from the AC unit. I’m really worried their cough is connected to this. How dangerous is this specific type of mold and should I take them to a doctor immediately?

It's very possible the cough is connected. Exposure to mold spores, especially in an enclosed space like a bedroom, is a common irritant that can cause persistent coughing, wheezing, and congestion, particularly in children.

The term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins and is more concerning than common mold. However, many dark-colored molds look similar. Without a lab analysis, you cannot confirm the species or its specific health risks. The constant Dubai AC use creates perfect conditions for this; cold surfaces meet humid air, leading to condensation and hidden mold growth in walls and behind furniture.

You should take your children to a doctor and explicitly mention the mold discovery. This allows the doctor to consider environmental causes for the respiratory symptoms. For the home, this is a serious case requiring professional assessment. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source (likely the AC condensate drain or a leak in the ductwork) and the full extent of the growth, which is often larger than what's visible. Remediation involves fixing the water issue first, then safely containing and removing the contaminated materials. DIY cleaning is not advised for a large patch, as it can aerosolize a high volume of spores. Look for a provider that uses containment barriers, HEPA filtration, and can provide verification that the space has been returned to a normal fungal ecology.
