Safe way to remove black mold with asthmatic child?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I finally checked behind the toilet in our master bathroom. I found a patch of black mold that seems to have been growing there for a while, probably from the humidity. I’m really worried about their health, especially with my youngest having asthma. What’s the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this mold for good without making the spores spread everywhere?

For a small patch, mix a solution of 80% white vinegar and 20% water in a spray bottle. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the surface color and can release more irritants into the air. Lightly mist the area to dampen the mold and prevent spores from becoming airborne, then gently scrub with a small brush. Wear an N95 mask and gloves.

With an asthmatic child, containment is critical. Seal the bathroom from the rest of the home by closing the door and placing a towel at the base. Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for at least 30 minutes after cleaning to remove spores from the air.

Given Dubai's high humidity, the root cause is likely persistent moisture. After cleaning, the area must be kept completely dry. Improve ventilation by running the AC consistently and the exhaust fan during and after showers. For a recurring issue, a professional inspection can identify hidden moisture sources in walls or under flooring that DIY cleaning cannot address. If the mold covers more than one square meter, or if the coughing persists after removal, a professional assessment and air quality testing are strongly recommended to identify the specific mold type and ensure it is fully resolved.
