Is AC mold making my baby sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to have black dust blowing out of the vents, and my one-year-old has had a runny nose and a cough for over a week now that won't go away. We're in a older building in Deira and I've noticed the damp patches on the ceiling around the unit have gotten worse since the humidity spiked. How urgently do I need to get a professional to look at this, and should I be taking my son to a doctor first?

Black dust from AC vents combined with your child's persistent symptoms warrants immediate attention. The damp patches indicate an active moisture issue, which in Dubai's high humidity is a primary cause for mold growth within AC systems and ductwork.

For your one-year-old, consult a pediatrician first. Explain the situation, including the visible black dust and the timeline of his symptoms. Respiratory irritation from mold exposure is common and can manifest as a lingering cough and runny nose. A medical professional can rule out other causes and provide appropriate care.

Schedule a professional indoor air quality inspection as soon as possible. The inspector will identify the moisture source, typically condensation leaks from clogged drain lines or poor insulation in older Deira buildings, and assess the contamination level in the unit and ducts. A proper assessment often includes air and surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab to identify the specific type of mold, which determines the necessary remediation steps.

Until the inspection, minimize your son's exposure. Keep him out of the room when the AC is running and consider using a portable HEPA air purifier in the main living area. Do not attempt to clean the vents yourself, as this can disturb spores and spread them further. The remediation process for a contaminated system involves specialized equipment to contain the area, clean the ducts, and treat the AC evaporator coil to prevent regrowth.
